The military council announced today that they will hold Part 1 of the election on December 28. The election commission under the military’s control stated that they will begin Part 1 of the election for various parliaments and will continue to announce dates for subsequent parts. The military has announced constituency areas for the entire country, including townships that are no longer under their control.
The military announced they will hold elections in 330 constituencies for the People’s Parliament, 110 constituencies for the National Parliament, 364 constituencies for State and Regional Parliaments, and 29 ethnic minority constituencies. However, in reality, most townships in Rakhine, Chin, Northern Shan, Karen, Kachin, and Karenni states have already been liberated from military control. Additionally, fighting continues in rural areas of Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago, Magway, and Tanintharyi regions, except for urban areas.
Notably, the military has included all territories controlled by ethnic revolutionary organizations in their announced election constituencies, including areas under the control of the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), United Wa State Army (UWSA), Mongla forces, Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), Arakan Army (AA), Kachin Independence Army (KIA), Karen National Union (KNU), Chin National Front (CNF), and other ethnic armed organizations.
The military’s planned election will include 68 constituencies using the Proportional Representation (PR) system. This comprises 26 constituencies for the National Parliament and 42 constituencies for State and Regional Parliaments, while all remaining constituencies will use the First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) system. However, political analysts point out that given the current political situation, it is impossible for the military to conduct elections as announced across these territories.
