The military council conducted an unprovoked airstrike on a monastery in Nabe Myit village, Natogyi Township, Mandalay Region, resulting in the destruction of a pagoda and severe damage to the entire monastery building, according to local residents. The attack occurred around midnight on May 8, when military aircraft dropped one bomb directly on the monastery compound, followed by another bomb on an agricultural farm east of the village. While there were no reported casualties from the aerial bombardment, the strike caused significant destruction to religious structures.
According to local witnesses, the military council’s aircraft deliberately targeted the village monastery where there was no active conflict or presence of armed forces. A local resident confirmed that two bombs were dropped during the attack – one hitting the monastery at the entrance of the village and another landing on a banana plantation to the east of the village. The bombing resulted in the collapse of the pagoda and extensive damage to the monastery buildings, though fortunately no civilian casualties were reported in this incident.
This is not the first time the village has been targeted by the military council’s airstrikes. On April 29, the military council had previously conducted aerial attacks on Nabe Myit village, causing extensive damage to numerous civilian homes. These repeated attacks demonstrate a pattern of the military council targeting civilian infrastructure and religious buildings, continuing their campaign of violence against innocent civilians. The destruction of religious sites and civilian properties highlights the ongoing aggressive actions of the military council against local communities, even in areas where there is no active conflict or military engagement.
