Revolutionary sources have confirmed that after successfully capturing Banmauk city in Kachin State, the military and Shanni (SNA) forces have regrouped in the western part of the city and launched a counter-offensive. On the evening of September 20, as the military and SNA forces retreated from Banmauk, they forcibly took at least 300 civilians as human shields during their withdrawal. This action has significantly complicated the situation and limited the revolutionary forces’ ability to pursue the retreating forces.
On the evening of September 21, military and SNA forces regrouped in the western section of the city and began attempts to recapture Banmauk. Revolutionary forces have been forced to suspend further offensive operations due to concerns for civilian safety, as the military continues to use local residents as human shields. The situation remains fluid with ongoing clashes in and around the city. A resistance source explained that while they had successfully driven out the military forces initially, the presence of civilian hostages has created a complex tactical situation that requires careful consideration to minimize civilian casualties.
The military conflict has displaced more than 1,500 residents from Banmauk, with many fleeing into nearby forests and mountains for safety. The military has been conducting airstrikes on the city, deliberately targeting civilian homes and infrastructure. They continue to carry out aerial bombardment and surveillance operations on areas suspected of housing revolutionary forces, showing complete disregard for civilian safety and property. Local sources report that the military’s aerial attacks have been persistent, causing significant damage to civilian areas and forcing more residents to flee their homes. The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate as access to basic necessities becomes increasingly limited for both displaced persons and those still trapped in the conflict zone.
