Companies owned by Min Aung Hlaing’s son Aung Pyae Sone, military-owned UMEHL, and other military-affiliated businesses have been granted permission to import materials needed for constructing temporary buildings in Naypyidaw, which was struck by an earthquake on March 28. Following extensive damage to government office buildings and staff housing in Naypyidaw due to the earthquake, the military council is arranging rapid construction of temporary structures to maintain normal operations of government offices.
While China Aid has donated temporary buildings, these donations were insufficient to meet the requirements, leading the military council to grant import permissions to companies closely associated with them. Priority has been given primarily to companies owned by Min Aung Hlaing’s son Aung Pyae Sone, the military-owned Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited (UMEHL), and other military-affiliated companies. According to a military source in Naypyidaw, the normal tender process has been bypassed and direct import permissions have been granted due to the urgency to complete construction before the rainy season begins.
Aung Pyae Sone owns numerous businesses including Sky One Construction Company, Bone Myat Pyae Sone, Myanmar Sit Thu Gyi, Min Taya Gyi, Winning Sky, Azura Beach Resort, A&M Mahar Company, and Nyein Chan Pyae Sone Manufacturing & Trading Company. He also holds shares in the mobile phone company MyTel and is involved in insurance services, electric vehicle imports, and solar panel imports. Additionally, he has secured numerous construction tenders from both military and government departments. His business interests span small, medium, and large-scale enterprises across Myanmar, particularly in construction projects, road and bridge development, and various infrastructure contracts with both military and civilian government ministries.
