At the COVER nightclub located at the corner of 53rd and 36th Streets in Yemon Taung Ward, Maharaungmyay Township, Mandalay, DJ Violet played and danced to the Buddhist religious song ‘Buddham Saranam Gacchami’ as a DJ track, resulting in her arrest by the military council and the subsequent closure of the nightclub. The incident came to light after videos spread on social media showing the Buddhist prayer song being played and danced to in a party atmosphere at the nightclub.
Following the circulation of these videos, Ma Ba Tha extremist monk Pauk Ko Taw and the nationalist extremist Patriotic Monks Association’s Ashin Sucita demanded action, claiming it was an act of disrespect towards Buddhism. Subsequently, the military council arrested DJ Violet, whose real name is Ma Khin Htwe Htwe Mon, and ordered the complete closure of the COVER nightclub in Mandalay. A friend from the artistic community close to DJ Violet explained the situation, confirming that she had been taken in by authorities. The source indicated that family members are currently attempting to resolve the matter through apologies and reconciliation, suggesting that if successful, she might be released after signing a pledge. However, if unsuccessful, she could face formal charges. The source added that it was too early to definitively characterize the situation as an arrest.
DJ Violet (Ma Khin Htwe Htwe Mon) posted an apology on social media for playing and dancing to the Buddhist song as a DJ track. She also personally visited the Sangha Nayaka Committee in Thingangyun Township to apologize for her actions. However, Ashin Sucita from the nationalist extremist Patriotic Monks Association issued a statement declaring that legal action would be taken against Htwe Mon, who is the daughter-in-law of Nay Myo Aung, and her associates for playing and dancing to a Buddha-related song in a nightclub manner that allegedly hurt the feelings of Buddhists. Similarly, Ma Ba Tha extremist monk Pauk Ko Taw also called for action to be taken against DJ Violet.
