
Military council leader Min Aung Hlaing announced through military-owned television that the powerful earthquake centered near Mandalay has resulted in 144 deaths and 1,464 injuries so far. The earthquake struck on March 28 at 12:51 PM, with its epicenter near the Bagan region close to Mandalay. The highest casualties and injuries were reported in Naypyidaw, Sagaing, and Kyaukse areas.
According to the detailed breakdown, there are currently 96 deaths in Naypyidaw Council Territory, 18 in Sagaing, and 30 in Kyaukse. The number of injured people includes 432 in Naypyidaw, 300 in Sagaing, and 732 in Kyaukse. The earthquake has caused widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure, and with rescue operations still ongoing, authorities have warned that the number of casualties and injuries may continue to rise.
The earthquake’s impact has also been significantly felt in the ancient cultural heritage site of Bagan, where numerous pagodas and religious structures have suffered damage. The effects of the earthquake extended to Naypyidaw, Mandalay, Sagaing, Magway, and Bago regions, causing buildings to crack and collapse. Currently, rescue teams are continuing their efforts to search for and rescue people trapped under debris. The extensive damage to infrastructure and historical sites, combined with ongoing rescue operations, suggests that the full extent of the earthquake’s impact may not yet be fully known.
