The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has confirmed that an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 struck in the sea approximately 86 kilometers from Phyapon city near Yangon. The seismic event occurred at 10:57 PM on April 2nd, with its epicenter located in the waters south of Phyapon. The tremor was felt in various parts of Yangon and surrounding areas, with authorities currently assessing any potential damage from the earthquake.
Residents of Yangon reported varying experiences of the seismic activity. While many city dwellers were unaware of the earthquake when it occurred, others distinctly felt a single, gentle tremor. The relatively mild nature of the shock may explain why many people did not notice it. However, due to lingering concerns from the previous earthquake on March 28th, some residents continue to spend their nights outdoors on main streets as a precautionary measure, highlighting the ongoing anxiety within the community regarding seismic activity.
Although the earthquake’s epicenter was located in the sea, prompting initial concerns about tsunami risks, no tsunami warnings were issued by relevant monitoring authorities. The public has been advised to remain calm and to rely only on official sources for information regarding seismic activities. The moderate intensity of the earthquake and its offshore location have helped minimize immediate risks to populated areas, though authorities continue to monitor the situation closely for any aftershocks or related seismic activity.
