On March 15, the Letpadaung Anti-Dictatorship Protest Group led a public campaign in Salingyi Township calling for the immediate implementation of Article 33 of the International Labour Organization (ILO) against the military council. The campaign was conducted under the title ‘ILO implement Article 33 On Myanmar Now 2025’. This initiative represents a significant move to address the ongoing human rights violations and labor rights abuses in the region.
The Letpadaung region has gained international attention for the military council’s persistent violations of human rights and labor rights. The military council has been engaging in forced military recruitment, imposing forced labor on local residents, confiscating public property, conducting arbitrary arrests, and subjecting civilians to torture and mistreatment. These actions have severely impacted the local community and violated fundamental human rights principles.
Article 33 of the ILO Constitution provides mechanisms for effective action against member states that seriously violate labor rights. The Letpadaung Protest Group’s campaign aims to utilize this article to advocate for international action against the military council. This movement seeks to protect workers’ rights throughout Myanmar and halt the military council’s human rights violations. The protest group’s actions reflect the broader struggle of Myanmar’s civilian population against military oppression and their demand for international intervention to address these systematic violations of labor and human rights.
