The Guardian news agency has received CCTV footage of court proceedings involving State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President U Win Myint, along with detailed records of the public leader’s daily prison life through the People’s Embrace organization. The records include documentation of Aung San Suu Kyi’s daily routines, living conditions, and scenes from her court appearances. The CCTV footage obtained by The Guardian was recorded during August and December 2022, showing both President U Win Myint and Aung San Suu Kyi facing trial in court.
According to the prison records, Aung San Suu Kyi’s daily schedule begins at 4:30 AM and ends at 8:30 PM. She spends over an hour meditating each morning and exercises by walking inside her cell in the evening. She also regularly recites Buddhist prayers. Regarding her diet, Aung San Suu Kyi is known to eat modestly, typically having fried eggs for breakfast, a small portion of rice with meat or fish for lunch, and bread for dinner. One record detailed a lunch consisting of two servings of rice, chicken, fish ball soup, two pieces of chocolate, and a small portion of dragon fruit. The documentation reveals her structured daily routine and simple living conditions within the prison.
Since the military coup in 2021, Aung San Suu Kyi has only been allowed access to newspapers published by the military. According to a prison department source who saw her in early 2024, while her voice and walking manner remain unchanged, she no longer wears flowers in her hair. As she approaches her 80th birthday, Aung San Suu Kyi remains imprisoned following her detention after the military coup, serving multiple sentences on various charges that have been widely condemned as politically motivated. The leaked documents provide a rare glimpse into the daily life of the detained civilian leader who continues to face legal proceedings under military detention.
