Anti-dictatorship protest groups in the Letpadaung region conducted a public movement on March 20 calling for immediate action against the military council under Article 33 of the International Labour Organization (ILO). This movement aims to urge the international community to take action against the military council’s violations of labor rights. Local residents in the Letpadaung region have been living in fear due to the military council’s violations of labor rights, forced labor practices, and arbitrary arrests.
Article 33 of the International Labour Organization allows member states to implement economic sanctions against countries that violate labor rights. By organizing this movement, the Letpadaung region’s anti-dictatorship protest groups aim to encourage the international community to take effective action against Myanmar’s military council. The military council has been committing various labor rights violations, including suppression of labor unions, arrest of labor leaders, wage reductions, and other infringements of workers’ rights.
