The Karen National Union (KNU) Central Committee has officially announced the successful capture of the Maw Kwee Lu military camp, which had been occupied by the military council forces in Hpa-an District, Karen State. The operation began at 5:30 AM on May 16, targeting the military council troops from Infantry Battalion 24 stationed in Thandaunggyi (Paing Kyon) Township. This strategic offensive marks a significant victory in the ongoing resistance against the military council’s occupation of the region.
The operation was carried out through a coordinated effort between the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) under Brigade 7 and the Karen National Defense Organization (KNDO). The area had been under the military council’s control for an extended period, during which local civilians endured various forms of oppression, including excessive taxation and human rights violations. The successful capture of this military position represents a crucial development in establishing security for local communities and limiting the military council’s operational capabilities in the region.
The liberation of the Maw Kwee Lu camp demonstrates the growing strength and effectiveness of the resistance forces in Karen State. This victory is particularly significant as it disrupts one of the military council’s strategic positions in the Hpa-an District and represents another milestone in Myanmar’s Spring Revolution. The coordinated action between different Karen armed organizations showcases the unity and determination of the resistance forces in their struggle against the military council’s oppression and their commitment to protecting civilian populations in the region.
