The Karen National Union (KNU) issued a significant statement on May 9th expressing grave concerns about the military council’s plans to construct a nuclear power plant using Russian technology. The statement emphasized that this development poses serious risks to the safety, security, and well-being of both Myanmar and Thai citizens. The announcement came following the KNLA’s recapture of the Theechaung area in Dawei Township, Tanintharyi Region.
The statement, released by the KNU’s Myeik-Dawei District, addressed Thai citizens living along the Thai-Myanmar border regarding the military situation in Theechaung. The KNU detailed how the military’s occupation of the Myeik-Dawei District territory in 1997 led to ongoing military conflicts and forced displacement of local residents. The organization emphasized that KNU Brigade 4’s decision to regain control of the Theechaung military base was crucial for ensuring the security of people living in both Myanmar and Thailand.
The KNU believes that military action against the military council is necessary to secure people’s right to self-determination and protect them from military violence. Regarding the nuclear power plant construction plans, the KNU identified two potential locations: central Bago Region and the Dawei Special Economic Zone in Tanintharyi Region near the Thai border. The organization expressed particular concern about these locations and their potential impact on regional security.
The statement also addressed Thai-Myanmar relations, emphasizing the KNU’s historical and ongoing peaceful coexistence with Thai people. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining respectful and friendly relations as good neighbors, both now and in the future. The KNU expressed its dedication to building lasting peace and cooperation with Thailand, while seeking understanding from the Thai people regarding the current military operations. This comprehensive statement reflects the KNU’s commitment to regional stability while opposing the military council’s potentially dangerous nuclear development plans.
