The Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) joint forces successfully captured the military council’s Thay Baw Bo camp near the Thai-Myanmar border in Myawaddy Township, Karen State, on the evening of June 3. The offensive operations began on June 2, with KNLA forces laying siege to the military council camp. The fighting intensified significantly on June 3, during which the military council conducted continuous airstrikes in an attempt to defend the position. Eventually, the military council troops in the camp surrendered by raising white flags, according to military sources.
Following the fall of Thay Baw Bo camp, only four military council camps remain along the Thai-Myanmar border. These remaining camps are located at Ukayittha, Waw Lay Byu Hakone, Ti Thay Lay, and Htee Ka Play. The Karen National Union (KNU) has been systematically capturing military council camps in the border region since March this year, successfully taking control of several strategic positions including Pu Lu Tu, Khlay Day, Thaw Ko Bi Khee, Maw Phar Thu, Ta Lay, May La, Black Do, Maw Khee, Bogyoke Aung San Camp, Ka Nay Lay, and Shwe Aye Myaing camps.
The Thay Baw Bo camp had previously been attacked in May 2022 by revolutionary forces led by the Cobra Column and Major Eh Say Wah. This marks the second time the camp has been captured. In the current battle, all military council personnel, including the camp commander, surrendered and came under the control of revolutionary forces. This development represents a continuing decline in the military council’s control along the Thai-Myanmar border, while revolutionary forces continue to expand their territorial control in the region.
