According to KNU military sources, KNLA allied forces are currently blocking and attacking military council troops that were attempting to reach the Thaybawboe military camp near DKBA headquarters in Suagonemyaing, Karen State along the Thai-Myanmar border in Myawaddy Township. The fighting began on May 27 along the Wawlay road south of Myawaddy, where KNLA allied forces intercepted and attacked military council forces that had reached the Magala Bridge area and military parade ground near DKBA Democratic Karen Benevolent Army headquarters in Suagonemyaing village. Heavy fighting has continued through May 28.
Military council troops attempted to cross over from the Thai side via the Wawlay strategic point to reinforce the Thaybawboe camp. Local residents from Suagonemyaing and Tawni areas have fled to the Thai side for safety. KNLA allied forces are also currently besieging and attacking the military council’s Thaybawboe camp and guard post positions near Thaybawboe village. The military council has deployed thousands of troops across the Thaybawboe, Kyaukhtat, Tawni, Suagonemyaing and Wawlay areas.
KNU military sources assess that to effectively combat these forces, the Wawlay road needs to be cut off similar to operations in 2022. Without controlling this supply route, fighting will likely continue as the military council can keep receiving reinforcements of both personnel and ammunition via civilian vehicles. The KNLA allied forces are also conducting ongoing offensive operations against military council camps in the border area, including attacks on positions at Kaneley, Mawkhi, and Thaysoleplae camps along the Thai-Myanmar border in the Wawlay region.
