International labor representatives held a demonstration outside the United Nations headquarters in New York, calling for action against Myanmar’s military council under ILO laws. The protest, which took place on June 4th beneath the Broken Chair sculpture, brought together members of global labor unions and conference delegates from various nations. The demonstrators demanded continued effective measures against the military council and called for action under Article 33. They emphasized their solidarity with the Myanmar people and demanded immediate cessation of human rights and labor rights violations by the military council.
The protest featured speeches from the National Unity Government’s tripartite delegation, including Deputy Minister of Education Dr. Sai Khaing Myo Tun, along with representatives from Myanmar labor unions and business sectors. They highlighted the current situation in Myanmar, detailing the military council’s ongoing human rights violations and oppression of workers. The NUG’s Ministry of Labor reported that the demonstration successfully drew international attention to the various challenges facing Myanmar’s people under military rule.
The tripartite delegation led by the National Unity Government’s Ministry of Labor attended the 113th International Labor Conference (ILC) with the primary objective of securing recognition for the NUG’s tripartite representation and pursuing economic actions against the military regime. During the conference, delegates discussed the military’s human rights violations, labor rights infringements, and aerial bombardments of civilian areas, advocating for effective sanctions and interventions to halt these aggressive actions.
Conference participants, including government representatives, business leaders, and labor union members from various nations, reached a significant decision regarding the military council. They concluded that if the regime continues to receive revenue, it will persist in its violent actions against civilians. Based on the findings of the ILO’s Commission of Inquiry regarding the military council’s violations of human rights and labor rights, the conference decided to implement effective measures against the regime. This decision represents a crucial step forward in international efforts to support the Myanmar people’s struggle against military oppression.
