Military sources from the Thai-Myanmar border have confirmed that intense fighting continues at Waw Lay Strategic Hill and Thay Thay Lay Camp in Myawaddy Township, Karen State, with the military conducting ongoing airstrikes. In today’s battles, a military YAK-130 aircraft dropped more than 50 bombs, while approximately 20 soldiers fled from the Waw Lay strategic camp as fighting intensified.
On August 5th and 6th, the military conducted pursuit operations to capture 20 soldiers who had fled from Waw Lay Strategic Hill. While some were recaptured, others reportedly defected to the KNLA forces. Additionally, from August 4th to 6th, as KNLA forces approached the vicinity of Waw Lay Strategic Hill, the military conducted surveillance using drones and launched heavy artillery attacks, resulting in injuries to some revolutionary fighters. The military has been using both aerial bombardment and drone strikes, along with heavy artillery fire, which has forced approximately 200 local civilians to flee to the Thai side of the border, where Thai authorities are providing humanitarian assistance.
Currently, only two military camps remain along the Thai-Myanmar border in Myawaddy Township – Waw Lay Strategic Hill and Thay Thay Lay Camp – with ground reinforcements no longer possible. Since March of this year, KNU/KNLA joint forces have been conducting operations against military camps along the border region, successfully capturing numerous positions including Pu Lu Tu, Khlay Day, Thaw Kho Bi Khee, Maw Phar Thu Camp, Thar Lay Camp, May La, Black Do, Maw Khee, Bogyoke Aung Camp, Ka Nay Lay Camp, Shwe Aye Myaing Military Camp, Thay Baw Boe Camp, Htee Ka Play Camp, and U Ka Hit Camp.
