
Intense fighting broke out between the military council forces and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) in the jade mining area of Mawsizar, Hpakant Township, Kachin State. The conflict began around 9 AM on June 12, with combined forces of KIA and People’s Defense Force (PDF) engaging military council troops in the Mawsizar hill area. By noon, KIA forces successfully conducted an ambush operation against military council troops and their allied militia who had gathered at a jade mining site. According to KIA sources, at least 20 military council personnel were killed in the operation, with many others wounded.
During the fighting, military council troops reportedly targeted and fired upon civilians in the area. Around 6 AM on June 12, the bodies of three civilians who had been shot dead by military council soldiers were discovered near the Mawsizar pagoda hill junction. According to local residents, the fighting continued throughout the day, with constant sounds of gunfire echoing through the area. One local resident reported that the fighting had been intense since 9 AM, with continuous exchanges of fire.
The conflict in the Mawsizar pagoda hill area of Lonekhin village tract, Hpakant Township, initially began on June 10. Military council forces have been conducting daily artillery bombardments targeting Mawsizar, Thayakone, Lonekhin cemetery, Lonekhin hospital, and Lonekhin village. During the two days of fighting, the military council suffered at least 20 casualties, and their troops reportedly destroyed civilian property in Kasi Maw village. The ongoing conflict has significantly impacted the local population, with military forces continuing their pattern of indiscriminate attacks on civilian areas and infrastructure.
