The Ponnargyun Youth Association (PYA) announced on June 18 that internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in Ponnargyun Township, Rakhine State, are experiencing severe flooding due to heavy rainfall. More than 200 displaced households are currently affected by the flooding, with conditions described as critical. According to a PYA official, floodwaters have entered the IDP camps, reaching waist-high levels in most areas and chest-high levels in some locations. The situation has created significant challenges for the displaced populations.
The flooding has severely impacted the daily lives of IDPs, making it impossible for many to cook meals or maintain adequate living conditions. Some shelters have been completely submerged, while others have been swept away by strong currents. The PYA reports that the displaced people are facing multiple challenges related to food security, shelter, and basic necessities. The combination of heavy rainfall and mountain runoff has created a particularly dangerous situation for these vulnerable communities.
The PYA has issued a call for emergency assistance, stating that those who wish to help can coordinate their aid efforts through their organization. The flooding has created an urgent humanitarian crisis, with displaced people requiring immediate support for food, shelter, healthcare, and safety. Local residents report that the situation continues to deteriorate, emphasizing the critical need for emergency aid to address the basic needs of those affected by both conflict displacement and natural disaster.
