The military council leader Min Aung Hlaing has appointed former Navy Chief Tin Aung San as National Security Advisor, replacing former advisor General Moe Aung. The announcement was made by the military council on August 5th. According to the statement, Tin Aung San, who currently serves as Minister of the State Administration Council’s Office 1, has been appointed as an advisor to analyze and provide recommendations on national security matters from multiple perspectives.
Tin Aung San has been serving as Minister of the State Administration Council’s Office 1 in the military council formed after Min Aung Hlaing’s coup, and will now take on the additional role of National Security Advisor. During the previous military regime, he held various positions including State Administration Council member, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, Minister of Transport and Communications, and Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office. Tin Aung San is a graduate of the Defense Services Academy Intake 23 and rose through ranks in the Navy to become Navy Chief.
The previous advisor General Moe Aung was also a former Navy Chief before being removed from his position as National Security Advisor to the military council. It is notable that two former Navy Chiefs have been consecutively appointed to the position of National Security Advisor. While Tin Aung San has extensive military experience, he has been involved in the military council’s acts of violence and anti-civilian activities. The appointment comes as the military council continues to face widespread resistance from the people of Myanmar while maintaining its grip on power through force and oppression.
