Myanmar youth and revolutionary forces in Thailand organized a football tournament to commemorate the 80th birthday of democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The event brought together Myanmar migrant workers, political asylum seekers, and revolutionary forces currently based in Thailand. Eight teams participated in the tournament, which was held as a gesture of respect and admiration for Aung San Suu Kyi and her ongoing struggle for democracy in Myanmar.
The participating youth are revolutionary fighters who continue to struggle against the military dictatorship in Myanmar and are strong supporters of Aung San Suu Kyi’s democratic movement. These young people, who were forced to flee to Thailand due to the military council’s oppression, chose to honor Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday through this sporting event as a demonstration of their respect for her leadership and unwavering commitment to democracy.
The tournament was held on June 16th, during which the participating youth expressed their wishes for Aung San Suu Kyi’s release, the freedom of all political prisoners, and the restoration of democracy in Myanmar. They also voiced their hopes for the swift end of the military dictatorship and the establishment of a genuine federal democratic system. The event served not only as a sporting competition but also as a platform for these displaced Myanmar youth to show their continued support for democratic values and their opposition to military rule in their homeland.
