The General Strike Coordination Body (GSCB) announced today, June 15, calling for public participation in the ‘Flower Strike’ and ‘Blue Shirt Campaign’ to commemorate the 80th birthday of public leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. These mass movements are planned for June 19, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday, with the dual purpose of honoring the birthday celebrant and demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners who have been arbitrarily detained. The movements also serve as a protest against the illegal election planned by the military council.
The first movement, the Flower Strike, involves various activities such as offering red roses and other available flowers at temples, wearing flowers in hair, arranging flower vases, exchanging flowers as gifts, and sharing these activities on social media. The GSCB has urged people to conduct these flower strike activities on the ground with full security awareness and precautions. The second movement, the Blue Shirt Campaign, aims to advocate for the release of political prisoners by encouraging people to wear blue clothing items such as blue shirts, longyi, pants, and hats.
These two movements will be conducted over an eight-day period from June 14 to June 21, with people able to participate either on a single day of their choice or daily throughout the campaign period. A member of the urban revolution strike group from inside the country has emphasized the importance of prioritizing security, advising participants to be cautious of potential threats from the military, police, and informants. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who will turn 80 on June 19, has been unjustly detained by the military council since February 1, 2021.
