Family members are demanding justice for a Myanmar student who died in a severe motorcycle accident near Assumption University in Bangkok, Thailand. The incident occurred on November 18, 2024, when a car violated traffic rules by making an illegal U-turn, colliding with a motorcycle carrying two Myanmar university students. The collision resulted in one death and left another student severely injured. The accident happened on the university access road when the car crossed a solid line, leaving the motorcycle riders with no time to avoid the collision.
The tragic outcome was exacerbated by delayed emergency response and alleged negligence from the university. The university’s ambulance had a flat tire, causing a critical one-hour delay in transporting the injured students to the hospital. Furthermore, neither CCTV footage from the university premises nor the car’s black box recordings were made available to document the incident. When the victims were finally taken to Ruamchai Pracharug Hospital, they faced additional challenges as medical treatment was initially denied due to the absence of passports. The hospital demanded 200,000 baht before proceeding with surgery. Despite eventually receiving surgical intervention, the student succumbed to severe brain injuries, with only a 10% survival chance following the operation.
The university attempted to provide 20,000 baht from the car driver as funeral expenses, but the family returned the money. The surviving 17-year-old student reportedly faced intimidation from university staff, who were also accused of harassing Myanmar teachers who tried to assist the affected families. The university staff’s alleged lack of empathy and proper assistance during the crisis has been a significant point of contention. The family reports that the car driver was allowed to post bail at the police station and arrived at the hospital only around 4 PM, while university officials allegedly pressured the family not to pursue legal action.
