
An explosion followed by a fire occurred at the military council-controlled Myanmar Economic Corporation’s Army Rum distillery factory in Ward 26, Road No. 4, Shwepyithar Township, Yangon Region, according to local residents and auxiliary firefighters. The incident began around 9:30 AM on July 23 when loud explosions were heard from inside the factory, followed by a fire. Several factory workers were reported injured in the explosion.
Multiple fire trucks and ambulances arrived at the scene following the incident to conduct firefighting operations. The fire lasted approximately half an hour and was completely extinguished by 10:20 AM, according to an announcement from the Shwepyithar Township Fire Department. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, with authorities examining the possibility of a boiler explosion as one potential cause.
According to local residents, the explosion was extremely loud and could be heard throughout the Sadhukan area. The factory is a military council-owned business enterprise primarily engaged in alcohol distillation operations.
