The MHAC Alliance has confirmed that they are working to ensure legal compensation for a Myanmar migrant worker who died in a machinery accident at a plywood factory in Nonthaburi, Thailand. The incident occurred on July 22nd, when 26-year-old Ko Hein Htet Naung was fatally injured after becoming caught in factory machinery during his work shift. The case has drawn attention due to the factory management’s apparent attempts to conceal the incident and their failure to follow proper reporting procedures.
According to reports from the MHAC Alliance, the factory management neither informed relevant government offices about the incident nor notified the deceased worker’s family members. Furthermore, they allegedly attempted to cover up the death and even threatened legal action against the victim’s friends who shared information about the incident on social media platforms. This behavior has raised serious concerns about workplace safety and transparency in handling industrial accidents involving migrant workers.
Ko Ye Min from the MHAC Alliance has stated that in cases of workplace accidents occurring during regular working hours, workers are entitled to compensation through the Pak Nam Pran fund, which can amount to more than 700,000 baht. However, the factory management has yet to engage in discussions regarding compensation. The MHAC Alliance has committed to continuing their assistance until the deceased worker’s family receives both the workplace accident compensation and the Pak Nam Pran fund payments they are legally entitled to.
In response to the incident, the MHAC Alliance, together with officials from the local Sawadi Kan office, has visited the factory to negotiate with management. They have also conducted meetings with over 200 workers at the facility, providing information about workers’ rights and accepting requests for assistance. The organization is currently focused on securing proper compensation for the deceased worker’s family while also working to strengthen overall worker protections. Their efforts include ensuring that proper safety protocols are followed and that workers are aware of their rights and the proper procedures for reporting workplace incidents.
