
An earthquake struck the Naypyidaw region early morning on April 14, causing alarm among local residents and civil servants. According to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management of the National Unity Government, the earthquake occurred at 2:32 AM, with its epicenter near Dekkhinathiri Township, Naypyidaw, at a depth of 7.6 kilometers and measured 4.7 on the Richter scale.
A resident from Shwe Kyar Pin Ward in Naypyidaw reported that the earthquake was notably felt while everyone was asleep, causing people to run outside their homes. The resident added that this particular tremor was quite intense, forcing people to remain squatting outside. Civil servant families in Naypyidaw also experienced considerable anxiety due to the earthquake’s intensity.
According to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology under the military council, the earthquake’s epicenter was located approximately 12 miles south-southeast of Taungdwingyi town, at a depth of 11 kilometers, measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale. A resident from Taungdwingyi confirmed that the earthquake was distinctly felt for more than 20 seconds at around 2:33 AM.
Additionally, on April 13 at 11:16 PM, another earthquake of lesser intensity, measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale, occurred with its epicenter approximately 36 miles southeast of Mawkmai town at a depth of 10 kilometers, as reported by the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology. It is worth noting that a previous earthquake on March 28 had caused significant damage to the Myanmar Gems Museum, resulting in its collapse.
