In Pyinmana, Naypyidaw, the death toll has risen to 86 following the earthquake that struck in the afternoon of March 28, according to local residents. Currently, not all bodies have been recovered from collapsed buildings, and approximately 500 injured people are receiving emergency medical treatment. The earthquake has caused about 80 percent of the city’s electrical poles to collapse, and natural disaster management teams have not yet arrived at the scene, according to local sources.
Following the earthquake, many people remain trapped along Bogyoke Road due to building collapses, with local firefighters, Red Cross members, and volunteer humanitarian groups working tirelessly on rescue operations. The injured are being treated at 200-bed and 1,000-bed hospitals in the city, with current patient numbers ranging from 400 to 500, according to hospital staff. Most city residents are now taking temporary shelter on the streets, facing numerous challenges due to the destruction of homes and disruption of water, electricity, and communication systems.
While local residents are working together on rescue efforts, they face significant challenges in providing necessary supplies, medicines, and basic necessities to those affected. Rescue operations are particularly challenging during nighttime due to power outages, according to those involved in the rescue work. The local community has mobilized to help one another, with firefighters, Red Cross workers, and volunteer groups leading the rescue efforts, despite the lack of official disaster management support. The situation remains critical as teams continue to work to recover those still trapped under debris and provide emergency care to the injured.
