Representatives from the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) and the National Unity Government (NUG) held an online meeting with South Korean parliamentarian Kang Yi-li to discuss support measures for Myanmar refugees and migrant workers in Thailand. The meeting, which took place on March 5, focused on addressing the various challenges faced by Myanmar nationals who have sought refuge in Thailand for different reasons. The discussion aimed to explore ways to improve their rights, living conditions, and economic opportunities.
During the meeting, participants reviewed the outcomes of the Korea-Thailand-Myanmar Global Forum on ‘Enhancing Rights and Economic Opportunities for Myanmar Refugees in Mae Sot,’ which was held on January 30. U Ukka Min, Chairman of the CRPH Labor Affairs Committee, and U Kyaw Ni, Deputy Minister of Labor from the National Unity Government, presented detailed information about the challenges faced by Myanmar refugees and migrant workers in Thailand. They particularly emphasized issues regarding legal documentation, residency difficulties, and the concerning practice of Thai authorities transferring detained Myanmar nationals to the military council.
The discussion placed special emphasis on the military council’s forced conscription of those who are handed over by Thai authorities, highlighting this as a serious human rights concern. The meeting also addressed the educational challenges faced by young Myanmar refugees in Thailand, with participants calling for increased support from the international community, particularly from South Korea and Thailand. The gathering included members of the CRPH, representatives from the Labor Affairs Committee, NUG officials, the NUG’s representative to South Korea and their office staff, border-based migrant assistance organizations, and representatives from South Korean civil society organizations, all working together to find solutions for Myanmar refugees and migrant workers in Thailand.
