The Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) and the National Unity Government (NUG) officials held an online meeting with South Korean parliamentarian Kang Yi-li on March 5 to discuss the situation of Myanmar refugees and migrant workers in Thailand. The meeting focused on addressing the rights, needs, and challenges faced by Myanmar nationals who have sought refuge in Thailand for various reasons. The discussion primarily centered on the difficulties these individuals face, including documentation issues and living conditions in Thailand.
During the meeting, participants reviewed the outcomes of the Korea-Thailand-Myanmar Global Forum on ‘Enhancing Rights and Economic Opportunities for Myanmar Refugees in Mae Sot,’ which was held on January 30. A major concern raised during the discussions was the Thai authorities’ practice of handing over detained Myanmar nationals to the military council, who subsequently forces them into military service. The participants also addressed the challenges faced by Myanmar’s younger generation in Thailand regarding access to education and other opportunities. Representatives emphasized the need for increased support from the international community, including South Korea and Thailand, to assist Myanmar people in need.
U Ukka Min, Chairman of the CRPH Labor Affairs Committee, and U Kyaw Ni, Deputy Minister of Labor for the National Unity Government, presented detailed information about the difficulties faced by Myanmar refugees and migrant workers. The meeting was attended by members of the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, members of the Labor Affairs Committee, National Unity Government officials, representatives to South Korea, and representatives from border-based organizations. The participants agreed to continue their collaborative efforts to support Myanmar refugees and migrant workers in Thailand, emphasizing the importance of protecting their rights and improving their living conditions while ensuring they are not forcibly returned to face persecution by the military council.
