The Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) and the National Unity Government (NUG) held an online meeting with South Korean parliamentarian Kang Yi-li to discuss the rights and socioeconomic advancement of Myanmar refugees and migrant workers who have fled to Thailand. The meeting, which took place on March 5, primarily focused on addressing the challenges and needs of Myanmar citizens who have sought refuge in Thailand for various reasons. The discussions centered on evaluating the outcomes of the previously held Korea-Thailand-Myanmar Global Forum on enhancing rights and economic opportunities for Myanmar refugees in Mae Sot.
During the meeting, participants reviewed the challenges faced by Myanmar nationals in Thailand, including issues related to documentation, residency permits, employment opportunities, and educational access. A particular emphasis was placed on the concerning practice of Thai authorities handing over detained Myanmar nationals to the military council, who subsequently forces them into military service. The meeting also addressed the difficulties faced by young Myanmar refugees in continuing their education in Thailand and explored ways to strengthen international support for Myanmar people in need of assistance.
The meeting was attended by U Ukka Min, Chairman of CRPH’s Labor Affairs Committee, U Kyaw Ni, Deputy Minister of NUG’s Ministry of Labor, along with representatives from border-based civil society organizations and South Korean social organizations. The discussions aimed to enhance international community engagement in creating educational opportunities, employment prospects, and social security for the new generation of Myanmar youth in Thailand. The participants emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts between South Korea, Thailand, and international stakeholders to improve the situation of Myanmar refugees and migrant workers, while ensuring their protection from the oppressive actions of the military council.
