A 50-year-old woman, Daw U, was shot dead by military council forces following a battle that occurred in Kawlin town, Sagaing Region, on May 4th. The incident took place after a clash between military council troops leaving Kawlin town and joint forces of Kawlin District Battalion 1 and People’s Defense Forces near Ta Village at around 7:30 AM. The military council column suffered significant casualties during the engagement and was forced to retreat back to Kawlin town.
During their retreat, military council soldiers fatally shot Daw U, an innocent civilian woman. According to local sources, Daw U was not involved in any political activities and was merely an ordinary civilian. The military council forces, having sustained heavy losses in the battle near Ta Village, carried out this act of violence against the civilian population as they withdrew back into the town. Local residents report that such brutal attacks on civilians have become a common occurrence by military council forces, creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity in the region.
The ongoing conflicts in Sagaing Region have resulted in widespread displacement of civilian populations, who are not only forced to flee their homes but also live in constant fear for their lives and property. This incident represents another example of the military council’s continued violence against civilians, particularly in areas where they encounter resistance from local defense forces. The situation has created a humanitarian crisis with local residents facing both the immediate dangers of military violence and the long-term challenges of displacement and insecurity.
