A civilian was injured when the military council’s navy launched artillery attacks in Kyaukphyu Township, Rakhine State. The incident occurred on May 24, when the navy fired more than 10 artillery shells at Kyauk Pyauk and Pyuchin villages between 9:00 AM and 12:30 PM. One of the shells landed and exploded in Kyauk Pyauk village, resulting in injuries to Daw Thein Thein Win, an internally displaced person from Pyaingsaikae village, who sustained wounds to her arm from artillery shell fragments.
Currently, intense fighting continues between the military council forces and the Arakan Army (AA) in Kyaukphyu Township. The military council deliberately targets civilian areas and IDP camps with artillery fire and airstrikes on a regular basis. According to local military experts, the AA has successfully captured several military council positions in the Kyaukphyu area during May, including the Lepchamauw outpost, Min Taw Taung guard post, and the Industrial Training School military base.
However, the AA has not yet issued any official statement regarding these captured positions. The current situation shows that the AA now controls 14 out of 17 townships in Rakhine State, while the military council maintains control only over Kyaukphyu, Man Aung, and Sittwe towns. According to local residents, daily clashes continue to occur particularly around Kyaukphyu and Sittwe, as both sides engage in ongoing military operations in these areas.
