Following military council leader Min Aung Hlaing’s return from his visits to Russia and Belarus, China’s Special Envoy for ASEAN Affairs, Deng Xijun, arrived in Naypyidaw and met with the military council’s Foreign Minister, U Wunna Maung Lwin. The meeting took place on March 10, just one day after Min Aung Hlaing returned to Naypyidaw from Russia on March 9. According to the military council’s statement, discussions focused on enhancing peace and stability along the Myanmar-China border, as well as internal peace processes and national reconciliation efforts.
China expressed its commitment to continued cooperation in maintaining peace and stability along the Myanmar-China border region. The talks also addressed the issue of combating online gambling and cyber scam operations in border areas. The military council has characterized the Russia trip as successful, announcing that Russia will invest in the Dawei Deep Sea Port project. Additionally, they claimed agreements were reached for cooperation in various sectors, including nuclear power plant construction, agriculture, human resources development, and space and satellite technology. The military council emphasized these developments as significant achievements in their international relations.
Despite these international engagements, the military council continues its campaign of violence against civilians, forced military conscription, and arbitrary detentions. Despite international pressure, the council persists in disregarding public will while attempting to maintain its grip on power. As a result, internal conflicts continue, leading to ongoing civilian casualties and suffering. The military council’s actions continue to destabilize the country while they seek international partnerships to strengthen their position, even as they face widespread resistance from the Myanmar people who oppose their illegitimate rule.
