A young Chin man with diabetes was forcibly taken while walking near Bathoo Housing in North Dagon Township, Yangon Region, shortly after being discharged from hospital. Maung Mor Dis La Beng Khuang, age 22, was arrested by plainclothes personnel while taking a prescribed walk as part of his recovery exercise around 8 PM on August 23 near the 48th ward of North Dagon Township where he resides. His family reports that he has been missing for five days with no contact since his arrest.
Maung Mor Dis La Beng Khuang had recently undergone surgery to remove a growth near his hip area and was following post-operative care instructions that included regular walking exercises. He requires daily medication for his diabetes condition, and his family expresses grave concern about his health as failure to take his prescribed medicine could be life-threatening. His brother emphasized that he walks with difficulty due to his recent surgery and medical condition. The family is particularly worried because his diabetes requires consistent medication management, and any interruption in his treatment could have severe consequences for his health.
The incident occurs amid ongoing forced recruitment drives in Yangon, with authorities conducting day and night arrests across multiple townships for the military’s 17th recruitment batch. These arrests have affected numerous young people, including those with medical conditions and those undergoing treatment, causing significant distress among families. Maung Mor Dis La Beng Khuang’s family remains deeply concerned about his health condition and hopes for his immediate release. The pattern of such arrests has become increasingly common in Yangon, with authorities showing little regard for the medical conditions or circumstances of those they detain for forced military service.
