
On March 28, a devastating earthquake centered near Sagaing city caused significant damage to buildings and resulted in multiple casualties in Mandalay. According to a representative from Voice of Mandalay who spoke to Yangon Modern News Agency, numerous buildings have collapsed, causing fatalities, while many people remain trapped under the debris as rescue operations continue.
In Mandalay’s Sein Pan quarter, the collapse of U Hman Gyi Grocery Store between 88th and 89th streets on 42nd Street resulted in the death of the shop owner. Another fatality was reported when the Zambu Aung Tea Shop at the corner of 42nd and 87th streets collapsed. The religious compound area also suffered severe damage, with multiple buildings collapsing and causing numerous casualties. However, officials have not yet been able to confirm the exact number of casualties as rescue operations are still ongoing.
Rescue efforts continue throughout the city as teams work intensively to extract people trapped under collapsed structures. The earthquake has caused extensive damage to historical buildings, residential homes, commercial structures, and religious buildings across Mandalay. Those involved in rescue operations suggest that the number of injuries and fatalities may continue to rise as they proceed with their work. The full extent of the damage and the final casualty count remain uncertain as emergency response teams continue their efforts to reach those still trapped beneath the rubble.
