The British Embassy in Yangon has issued a statement commemorating the third anniversary of the unlawful execution of four democracy activists, including Ko Zeyar Thaw and Ko Jimmy, by the military council. In the statement, the UK government expressed that they remember the four democracy activists who were unjustly executed by the Myanmar military three years ago, as well as all those who have tragically lost their lives and those who continue to be unjustly detained in Myanmar to this day.
The statement highlighted that detainees face violent interrogations and torture, while also being denied adequate medical care. It noted that more than 22,000 political prisoners remain in detention since the military coup, and nearly 7,000 political prisoners have died while in custody. The embassy’s statement emphasized that those in detention frequently face brutal treatment and are systematically denied their basic rights, including access to proper medical care.
The statement also mentioned recent tragic reports of the deaths of Ma Wut Yee Aung, a member of the All Burma Federation of Student Unions, and Ko Pyae Sone Aung, a National League for Democracy party member and political activist, while in detention. The British Embassy pointed out that the lack of timely medical treatment in prisons was clearly a major factor in their deaths. As a result, the UK government has renewed its call for the immediate release of all those who have been unjustly detained. The embassy emphasized that the Myanmar military must respect human rights and end the ongoing persecution of political prisoners.
