
According to sources in Yangon, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi’s son Kim Aris (also known as Htein Lin) accepted the 16th People’s Honor Award on behalf of his mother at a ceremony held in Houston, Texas, United States on May 24. The People’s Honor Award is a tradition maintained by Myanmar diaspora communities to recognize and honor deserving individuals still in Myanmar who have made significant contributions to the country and its people.
The People’s Honor Association selected Aung San Suu Kyi as the 2025 honoree in recognition of her lifelong dedication and sacrifices for Myanmar and its people, her leadership in the country’s democratic movement, and her unwavering commitment to democratic principles. The association’s statement particularly emphasized her steadfast resistance against the military dictatorship even while being unjustly detained, noting that she has refused to bow to the military regime that continues to perpetrate violence against civilians.
The award ceremony was attended by prominent figures including U Kyaw Moe Tun, Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Daw Zin Mar Aung, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the National Unity Government (NUG), U Aung Kyaw Moe, Deputy Minister of Human Rights, and U Aung Kyi Nyunt, patron of the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH). The People’s Honor Association has pledged to continue its efforts toward securing the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners, as well as working towards liberating the entire nation from the military dictatorship that continues to oppress the Myanmar people through forced conscription and various forms of persecution.
