People’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who is being unjustly detained by the military council in Naypyidaw Prison, is safe following the earthquake that occurred on March 28, according to her son Kim Aris. Speaking to Yangon Modern News Agency, Aris confirmed that the State Counsellor was unharmed during the seismic event and there were no immediate concerns for her safety under the current circumstances of her detention.
The powerful earthquake, measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, struck at approximately 12:52 PM on March 28, with its epicenter near Mandalay. The seismic event caused significant damage and casualties across central Myanmar, particularly affecting Naypyidaw, Mandalay, and Sagaing regions. However, reports indicate that the Naypyidaw Prison facility where Aung San Suu Kyi is being held did not suffer severe structural damage. U Nay Bon Latt, the spokesperson for the National Unity Government (NUG) Prime Minister’s Office, also confirmed that there were no immediate concerns regarding Aung San Suu Kyi’s safety during or after the earthquake.
According to a military source in Naypyidaw, the prison facilities, including the building where Aung San Suu Kyi is being detained, are single-story structures, making them more resilient to earthquake damage compared to high-rise buildings. The source confirmed that the prison complex experienced no significant incidents during the earthquake, and the single-story design of the detention facilities provided better structural stability during the seismic event. The military source also stated that no unusual incidents were reported within the prison compound as a result of the earthquake.
