The 46th ASEAN Summit held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has reiterated its call for implementing the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus to resolve the political crisis and conflicts in military-ruled Myanmar. Following the two-day meeting from May 26 to 27, ASEAN leaders issued a nine-point statement regarding the Myanmar situation.
ASEAN leaders expressed deep concern over the escalating conflicts in Myanmar and the deteriorating humanitarian situation caused by both the ongoing violence and the powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck on March 28. The regional bloc affirmed its commitment to helping find a peaceful and sustainable solution to the Myanmar crisis, reconfirming that the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus remains the key mechanism for addressing the situation. The leaders emphasized that Myanmar should implement the consensus through its own initiative and in accordance with Myanmar’s context and approach.
The statement strongly urged all parties to immediately cease violence against civilians and public spaces, ensuring the safety and security of all civilians. ASEAN welcomed the ceasefire declarations made by both the military council and opposition groups, while encouraging the announcement of a nationwide ceasefire to facilitate the safe delivery of humanitarian assistance, dialogue, and implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus. The leaders emphasized the importance of ensuring timely and effective delivery of humanitarian assistance without discrimination.
ASEAN further called on all stakeholders in Myanmar to build mutual trust and pursue a Myanmar-led conflict resolution process to achieve lasting peace. The statement underscored the importance of inclusive dialogue and peaceful resolution while maintaining ASEAN’s commitment to supporting Myanmar through this challenging period. The leaders stressed that any solution must prioritize the welfare and safety of Myanmar’s people while working towards sustainable peace and stability in the country.
