Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun, has declared that people in Myanmar, including the Rohingya, are living under fear without security, identifying the military and military dictatorship as the root cause of the problem. This statement was made during the first informal discussion of the Modality draft regarding the high-level international conference on the Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar, held at the UN Headquarters in New York on February 25.
The Ambassador emphasized the critical importance of ensuring safe, voluntary, and dignified return of the Rohingya, stating that finding a sustainable solution requires addressing the root causes and achieving a political resolution. He pointed out that the military and military dictatorship are at the core of the problem. During the past four years, every day has been tragic for Myanmar’s people due to the military’s brutality, with no one feeling secure. The Ambassador particularly highlighted how women, girls, and children are bearing the brunt of the military’s cruel actions, noting that both the overall situation and humanitarian conditions in Myanmar have severely deteriorated.
Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun stressed that the people of Myanmar desire peace and stability more than anything else, and they maintain a strong determination to achieve lasting peace and stability. He emphasized that effective international cooperation and support, aligned with the wishes and interests of Myanmar’s people, are essential in finding sustainable solutions for all issues in Myanmar, including the Rohingya crisis. The Ambassador further noted that the military continues to conduct indiscriminate aerial bombardments against civilians, leaving no security for anyone, including residents in Rakhine State. He called for positive assistance from the international community, particularly from neighboring and regional countries, emphasizing that the suffering of the people must end immediately. The Ambassador reiterated that Myanmar’s people need effective international cooperation and support that aligns with their aspirations and interests.
