Two aftershocks from the March 28 Sagaing earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.7, struck near Nwar Htoe Gyi and Myittha cities today, according to an announcement from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology. The tremors were distinctly felt in Mandalay and Naypyidaw regions, as reported by local residents. The first earthquake occurred at 3:31 AM, centered about 3 miles northeast of Nwar Htoe Gyi city, with a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter scale.
The second tremor struck at 6:12 AM, centered approximately 8 miles south-southwest of Myittha city, measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale. According to an official from the Meteorology Department, both of today’s minor earthquakes were aftershocks from the major March 28 earthquake and occurred along the Sagaing fault line. The 6:12 AM tremor was particularly noticeable to residents in Mandalay and Naypyidaw. A government employee in Naypyidaw described hearing a loud thud accompanied by house shaking, noting that while the duration was brief, the intensity was quite noticeable.
Similarly in Mandalay, residents reported significant effects from the 6:12 AM tremor. A housewife from Maharaungmyay Township described how her house shook while she was making offerings to Buddha, causing water to spill from the offering cups. She expressed concern about the continuing aftershocks, which have persisted for nearly three months since the major earthquake. The March 28 Sagaing earthquake resulted in nearly 4,000 deaths across Sagaing, Mandalay, and Naypyidaw regions, causing widespread building collapse and structural damage. Many damaged buildings remain precariously tilted to this day, posing ongoing safety risks to the population.
