A powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 magnitude struck the Mandalay and Sagaing regions at 12:52 PM on March 28, with aftershocks continuing throughout the night according to local residents. The initial earthquake’s epicenter was located 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing city, followed by a second quake measuring 6.4 magnitude approximately 12 minutes later, centered 18 kilometers south of Sagaing, as reported by the National Unity Government (NUG).
In Mandalay city, at least 10 aftershocks have been recorded since the main earthquake in the afternoon, while Kyaukse city has experienced no fewer than 6 aftershocks, according to local residents. Citizens have been forced to seek temporary shelter on streets due to concerns about building safety. Rescue operations are ongoing in Mandalay, Kyaukse, Sagaing, Aungban, and Naypyidaw, with reports indicating that people remain trapped in collapsed buildings.
The powerful earthquake has resulted in fatalities and extensive damage across Sagaing, Mandalay, Naypyidaw, Taunggyi, and Bago. The NUG has issued warnings advising people to avoid staying in damaged buildings and high-rise structures due to continued aftershocks, to inspect dams for potential cracks, to evacuate if necessary, and to be cautious of soil liquefaction in affected areas. Earthquake experts have also recommended relocating to safer areas due to risks of fire hazards and potential flooding from damaged dams. They advise checking electrical wires, water pipes, and fuel storage tanks for damage, and to stay away from coastal areas as a precautionary measure.
