The military council has officially announced that companies which originally constructed government office buildings damaged by the Sagaing earthquake in Naypyidaw on March 28 will be responsible for repairs and reconstruction. This announcement was made by Defense Minister General Maung Maung Aye, who chairs the Committee for Supervision of Building Repairs and New Construction, during the committee’s first coordination meeting in Naypyidaw.
Among the damaged buildings, the Presidential Palace was constructed by Eden Construction Company owner U Chit Khaing, while the Vice Presidential residences and Parliament Speaker residences were built by Htoo Company owner U Tay Za. The Wunna Theikdi Sports Stadium was constructed by Max Myanmar Company owner U Zaw Zaw. The Parliament building, which was constructed by ACE Company owner U Thein San, is notable as U Thein San has reportedly ceased communication with the military council and gone into hiding.
Additionally, family members and associates of former military officials who had received construction permits in Naypyidaw have also gone into hiding, with only some maintaining contact with the military council. These include the sons of former General Shwe Mann – Toe Naing Mann and Aung Thet Mann, companies owned by former Lt. Colonel Thein Nyunt’s son, and companies affiliated with former Livestock Minister Maung Maung Thein’s son. The airport communications tower and terminal building collapse is primarily attributed to Asia World Company owner U Htun Myint Naing, while A-1 Construction Company, Shwe Taung Construction owned by U Aik Tun, and Ayeyar Hinthar Company owned by U Zaw Win Shein are also responsible for repairing their respective ministry office buildings and military office structures they originally constructed.
