The abbot Venerable Bhaddanta Wisudda of a monastery in Kyauk Kwin village, Hpapun Township, Karen State, passed away following an unprovoked aerial bombardment by the military council forces on the evening of March 5. The attack, which occurred without any ongoing fighting in the area, also resulted in injuries to two other monks and caused significant damage to the monastery compound. Local residents confirmed that the military council forces not only dropped bombs from aircraft but also fired upon the monastery with machine guns during the assault.
The funeral ceremony for Venerable Bhaddanta Wisudda was held on March 6, while the two injured monks were transferred to Hpa-an city for medical treatment due to the severity of their injuries. The military council’s aerial attack caused extensive damage to the monastery buildings and destruction of property within the compound. Local residents pointed out that this deliberate targeting of a monastery without any military engagement serves as further evidence of the military council’s acts of violence, as the attack was carried out against a religious site where there was no active conflict taking place.
