The abbot of a monastery in Kyauk Kwin village, Hpapun Township, Karen State, passed away after the terrorist military council conducted an unprovoked aerial bombardment on the evening of March 5. According to local residents, Venerable Bhaddanta Visudha was killed when military aircraft bombed the monastery despite there being no fighting in the area. Two other monks were also injured in the attack, which caused significant damage to the monastery compound. Local sources confirmed that the military not only dropped bombs but also fired upon the monastery with machine guns.
The two injured monks suffered severe injuries and were transferred to Hpa-an city for medical treatment. The funeral ceremony for Venerable Bhaddanta Visudha was held on March 6, as confirmed by local residents. This deliberate targeting of a monastery in the absence of any military conflict represents another instance of the military council’s acts of terrorism against civilian and religious targets. The monastery in Kyauk Kwin village serves as a crucial religious center for the local community and holds significant importance for both the monks and civilian population.
Human rights observers note that the military council’s targeting of religious buildings constitutes a war crime and violates international law. This attack on the monastery demonstrates the military council’s continued pattern of violence against civilian infrastructure and religious institutions, showing complete disregard for human life and religious sanctity. The incident has further heightened concerns about the safety of religious buildings and civilian structures in conflict-affected areas, as the military council continues its campaign of terror against its own people.
