The Arakan Army (AA) has announced the release of 21 Bangladeshi fishermen who had illegally entered Rakhine waters, while expressing their desire to work with Bangladesh in resolving cross-border issues. The announcement was made by ULA/AA spokesperson U Khine Thuka on March 15, highlighting the organization’s commitment to maintaining positive relations with their neighboring country while addressing illegal border crossings.
This recent release follows a previous instance in February when 29 Bangladeshi fishermen who had illegally entered the territory were also released. The AA, which now controls the border areas along Bangladesh after capturing Buthidaung and Maungdaw regions from the military council, has been dealing with ongoing challenges related to illegal fishing activities in their waters. The organization has expressed concern about these unauthorized border crossings, noting that they pose a threat to the livelihood of legal fishermen from both countries.
According to U Khine Thuka, despite multiple warnings and signing of agreements, some fishermen continue to disregard these measures and enter illegally. However, the AA has chosen to handle these violations without harsh condemnation, prioritizing diplomatic relations between the two regions. The organization emphasizes its desire to work collaboratively with Bangladesh to find effective solutions to these border-related challenges, maintaining a balance between enforcing territorial integrity and preserving friendly relations with their neighbors. The AA’s approach demonstrates their commitment to regional stability while addressing security concerns in the areas under their control.
