The military has arrested Zaw Lwin (aka Taut Tae), the administrator of Ward 88 in Dagon Seikkan Township, Yangon Region, on charges of drug trafficking. During a mid-September raid on his residence, military and police forces discovered five bags filled with 10,000-kyat notes and a substantial quantity of WY stimulant tablets. The authorities also arrested his sons and sealed off the property, confiscating numerous items from the house according to local residents.
Prior to the military coup, Zaw Lwin was reportedly living as a day laborer in poverty. However, after becoming ward administrator, he rapidly accumulated wealth within just a few years. His assets grew to include six cars and fifteen motorcycles, while his house underwent extensive renovations and improvements. His eldest son, who serves as the administrator of Ward 81, has also been arrested along with his father on drug-related charges. Local residents have noted the stark contrast between his previous financial situation and his current wealth, pointing to his position as ward administrator as the turning point in his fortunes.
Zaw Lwin had previously survived two attacks by resistance forces in 2022 and 2023, sustaining injuries but escaping with his life. As ward administrator, he was known for oppressing local residents while operating under military protection. The news of his arrest has been met with celebration among ward residents, with some even making merit offerings in response to his capture. His arrest represents a significant development for the local community, who had long suffered under his administration, which was characterized by harsh treatment and exploitation backed by military authority.
