According to local sources, the military had set up a checkpoint on the road and was inspecting passing travelers when they signaled a young motorcyclist to stop for inspection.
According to sources from Wundwin Township, when the young man, frightened by the soldiers’ presence, continued riding without stopping, the troops pursued and opened fire, resulting in his death. Following the incident, local residents have become too afraid to use that road and have completely ceased traveling through the area. The Voice of Wundwin reported that after the shooting, the area became effectively off-limits to civilians due to fear of similar incidents. The incident has created a climate of terror in the local community, with residents avoiding the area where the shooting took place.
Similarly, in Salingyi Township, Sagaing Region, on the morning of September 19, patrolling soldiers shot at two young men on a three-wheeled motorcycle for allegedly failing to stop, resulting in their deaths. The two deceased civilians were from Nyaungpingyi Theintan village in Salingyi Township, and another civilian was injured in the incident. According to local residents, the soldiers were conducting patrol duties at a junction checkpoint when they attempted to stop the three-wheeled motorcycle for inspection. When the riders, out of fear, continued without stopping, the soldiers pursued and opened fire. The incident has further intensified the atmosphere of fear and insecurity among local residents, who are increasingly wary of military checkpoints and patrols in their area. Local sources confirmed that the victims were ordinary civilians from the local community who were likely trying to avoid confrontation with the military personnel.
