A spokesperson from the Monywa Township Information Team has confirmed that one woman was killed and four others were injured when the military council troops stationed at Ma-U Gate in Sagaing Region’s Monywa Township deliberately fired artillery into a civilian area. The incident occurred on September 17 at approximately 5:30 PM when military forces stationed at Ma-U Gate launched four artillery strikes into Nagartwin village, despite there being no active fighting in the area. The attack resulted in injuries to four women and one man, with one of the women succumbing to her severe injuries the following day on September 18.
The deceased woman was reportedly on her way to purchase flowers for religious offerings when she was struck by artillery fire. All victims were innocent civilians going about their daily activities. While no buildings were damaged in this particular incident, the attack demonstrates the military council’s deliberate targeting of civilians, even during peaceful religious activities. The military’s unprovoked artillery strikes resulted in the tragic loss of life of a civilian who was simply attempting to make merit through religious offerings.
In a separate incident on September 15 at 10:30 PM, military forces stationed at Aung Zayya Kon in Yinmabin Township fired seven rounds of howitzer artillery into Nyaungpinzauk village. This attack resulted in one civilian injury and the destruction of a vehicle. These incidents are part of a pattern of systematic attacks by the military council forces, who continue to target civilian populations through both airstrikes and artillery bombardments. The military council’s forces have been consistently launching deliberate attacks against civilians, using both aerial bombardment and heavy artillery, demonstrating a systematic approach to targeting civilian populations throughout the region.
