Military council leader Min Aung Hlaing has arrived in Dawei City, Tanintharyi Region, prompting authorities to deploy thousands of troops and implement strict security measures across the city, according to local residents and revolutionary sources. On September 18, all roads in the city have been blocked by the military, with thousands of security forces deployed and armored vehicles patrolling the streets. Military vessels are also conducting patrols in the Dawei River as part of the heightened security measures.
Min Aung Hlaing is visiting to attend the opening ceremony of the Dawei City Hall and is scheduled to meet with local administrative staff and business owners. He also plans to visit pagodas and monasteries in the city. The military has taken control of all streets within the city and deployed plainclothes security personnel throughout the area, according to local residents. The security presence includes thousands of troops, armored vehicles, and naval vessels, reflecting the military’s concerns about potential security threats during the visit.
The day before, fighting broke out along the Dawei-Launglone road, leading the military to deploy hundreds of troops and close the Kyamaukkin bridge. In preparation for Min Aung Hlaing’s visit, the military conducted what they called a clearance operation, bombing more than 10 villages across Dawei, Launglone, Thayetchaung, and Yebyu townships using two Y-12 aircraft. The aerial attacks resulted in the death of a 60-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man from Wedi village in Launglone township, while others, including elderly residents and children, were injured in the bombardment.
