The military has issued an order requiring all shops in Pyin Oo Lwin to install glass doors and panels as part of Min Aung Hlaing’s modernization plan for the city. According to the directive issued by the military-controlled Pyin Oo Lwin Municipal Committee on September 11, all shops within the city must install glass doors and panels by September 30. Failure to comply with the directive will result in fines and legal action, while repeat offenders will be blacklisted and face shop closure penalties.
The requirement applies to all commercial establishments in Pyin Oo Lwin, including home-based businesses. The cost of installing glass doors and panels for a single shop is estimated to range from 5 million to 10 million kyats. Shop owners have expressed significant concerns about their ability to comply with this mandate, given the current economic downturn. Many are struggling financially and find it extremely difficult to afford the required modifications. Local residents have also pointed out the impracticality of this order, noting that the city still lacks reliable electricity supply.
Following the military coup, Min Aung Hlaing has constructed a family residence in Pyin Oo Lwin and frequently visits the area. He has implemented plans to transform Pyin Oo Lwin into a modern city with shopping centers and hospitals. The projects include private hospitals, cancer specialty hospitals, a six-story modern shopping center at Su Mingala Market (Nyaung Taw Market), and recreational facilities. Notably, the Be Falls recreation area is being upgraded to international standards, with work beginning in December 2021. The operational rights for this recreational facility have been fully transferred to a company owned by his son, Aung Pyae Sone.
